4 Hide the background layer by clicking on the small glass icon under the layer palette.

Merge all visible layers ( Layers > Merge > Merge Visible)

5 Make a duplicate of your merged layer ( Layers > Duplicate ).  You should have a new layer called "Copy of Merged".  Hide "merged" layer. Then, make the "Copy of Merged" layer your active layer.

Now, here comes the fun part.  While text selection is still active, Press Control+Shift+F keys, then Control+Down+Left arrow keys -- do this 5-10 times.

6 Deselect active selection by pressing CTRL+D key.  Make "Merged layer" your active layer.  Hide "Copy of Merged" and make the "Merged" layer visible.

Choose the Rectangular Selection tool and press CTRL+A. Click your mouse anywhere on the image. This will create a selection on all objects on your Merged layer. Press CTRL+I to flip your image. Again, while text selection is still active, Press Control+Shift+F keys, then Control+Down+Left arrow keys -- do this 5-10 times.
